From Sewing Machine to Jigsaw: The Story of an Essential Tool
How a sewing machine became a cutting tool

The jigsaw is a must‑have in any workshop today, but its origin is far more surprising than you might expect.

An Unexpected Beginning

Did you Know?

Did you know that the world’s first jigsaw was inspired by a sewing machine?

In the mid‑20th century, Albert Kaufmann, an employee at the Swiss company Scintilla AG (later acquired by Bosch), noticed his wife using her sewing machine. The vertical, repetitive motion of the needle sparked an idea: What if that same mechanism could move a saw blade?
That moment of inspiration led to the creation of the very first electric jigsaw prototype.

From Prototype to Essential Tool

The first model was produced on a small scale until 1946, but its usefulness quickly became obvious. Before long, the jigsaw became indispensable for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts.

During the 1950s, as home improvement projects grew in popularity, the electric jigsaw established itself as a versatile, safe, and easy‑to‑handle cutting tool.

Innovation and Evolution

A major milestone arrived in 1966 with the introduction of the first universal jigsaw featuring adjustable pendulum action. This innovation allowed for faster, cleaner, and more controlled cuts, opening the door to more precise and creative work.

Since then, the jigsaw has continued to evolve—offering more power, reduced vibration, improved safety features, and greater comfort.

The Jigsaw Today

Today, it’s hard to imagine any workshop—professional or domestic—without a jigsaw. Its ability to cut curves, corners, various materials, and hard‑to‑reach areas makes it one of the most versatile tools available.

Its combination of precision, adaptability, and ease of use has made it a favorite among carpenters, installers, builders, and DIY lovers alike.
